Suggested itinerary

Day 1: Arrival to the City of Iquitos. Reception and transfer to Nauta city by private car / Reception at your hotel in Iquitos and transfer to Nauta. Transportation by motor boat to and in Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, during the trip you could see some pink and gray dolphins (bufeos) and various kinds of birds. Typical lunch on board. Arrival to the community and accommodation in the shelter or camping site. Excursion on foot or by boat around a lagoon (Huaylla cocha), to observe the elusive and well-known prehistoric birds (shanshos and Camungos). Dinner. Night walk to look for tarantulas, scorpions, south American giant frogs and nocturnal insects. Overnight in Pacaya Samiria national reserve.

Day 2: Early canoe excursion to look for and observe sloths and iguanas. Breakfast and departure in our motor boat by Pucate River looking for and observing various species of monkeys. Also colorful birds such as macaws, toucans and others. Arrival to a suitable place to camp. Lunch. Walk through the forest towards a cocha (lake), occasion to observe giant trees and learning about medicinal plants and their application today. Dinner. Night canoe excursion to search and observe alligators and night birds. In the same way we would have the opportunity to search and find snakes or other animals. Overnight in Pacaya Samiria national reserve.

Day 3: An early birdwatching excursion. Opportunity to listen and recognize different types of birds and their respective sounds and songs. Also search for other minor and major primates. Breakfast. Piranha fishing and other species of fish. Return to the camp in the community. Lunch. Free time to enjoy the refreshing waters of Pucate River, using our amusement equipment, such as floating sticks and floating chairs, while watching dolphins around us. Finally, return to Nauta city then to Iquitos city.

  • Excludes: Air tickets, airport taxes, head or hand flashlights, plastics raincoats, tips, crafts, alcoholic drinks and explorations not mentioned in the program.

REFUGES and CAMPSITE

-Accommodation

Small refuges and campsite located at Pacaya – Samiria National Reserve. The refuges have been built in harmony with the forest, we have used local materials. It has a rustic comprising style, palm thatched, which is used in the indigenous communities in the jungle.

At the camp, accommodation is in tents or in rustic wood (tambos)

 -Transfer

The excursion at Pacaya-Samiria is by river on board, wooden boats, with low-power motors to avoid environmental impact.

-Meals

Meals are based on fish, chicken bush meats and vegetables. Particular diets (vegetarian) must be communicated in advance.

-Guide and excursions

Guides are local people, raised in the Peruvian Rainforest, with an extensive and sensitive knowledge of the ecology and culture of the Amazon. Guides are able to explain the rainforest, showing important trees, flowers, medicinal plants and remedies, and help to identify species of birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies and other insects.

-Location

Located in a national reserve in the center of the Amazonian forest of Peru in the region of Loreto, understands from the opening of the Yanayacu and Pucate river in the Marañón River to cocha el Dorado, and throughout their course are five communities (Santo Domingo, Twenty of January, Buenos Aires, Arequipa and Yarina) and numerous sewers, great lakes and flooding zones. The population of these communities participates very actively in activities of handling of resources, protection and tourism.

Tips:

  • Clothes must be light colors and not tight to the body.
  • Travel with small backpacks or bags for easier transportation and to avoid handling by third parties.
  • You could get and bring candies, clothes, notebooks, and any other items you wish to gift to the children of indigenous communities.

Vaccines and other precautions:

Peru does not require travelers to receive vaccinations before visiting the Amazon rainforest. However, we recommend vaccines/pills for yellow fever, malaria, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid fever. These should be administered at least 10 days before your trip.
