Suggested Itinerary

Day 1: 6:00 am – “Arrival and First Immersion in the Jungle”

  • Reception in Iquitos (airport or hotel) and private vehicle transfer to the small community of San Joaquín de Omagua (1 hour 40 minutes along the Iquitos–Nauta road).
  • Navigation on the majestic Amazon River, enjoying your first glimpses of pink and grey dolphins in their natural habitat.
  • Arrival at the jungle lodge or campsite. Accommodation in rustic yet comfortable rooms.
  • Traditional jungle-style lunch at the camp.
  • Visit to the local community of San Juan de Yanayacu to learn about their traditions and culture.
  • Forest walk to discover medicinal plants and their traditional uses.
  • Dinner at the lodge.
  • Night walk to spot tarantulas, giant frogs, and other nocturnal insects.
  • Overnight at the base camp.

Day 2: 5:00 am – “Day of Exploration and Discoveries”

  • Early morning boat excursion to observe colorful birds like toucans, macaws, herons, kingfishers, and hawks as the sun rises over the rainforest.
  • Breakfast at the lodge in preparation for a full day of jungle exploration.
  • Canoe or motorboat trip to the deeper areas of the reserve, exploring Moena and Sapote Lakes. Here, you’ll find giant trees and wildlife like capuchins, howler monkeys, and other primates.
  • Jungle lunch under the forest canopy.
  • Guided trek through the primary rainforest to search for local mammals, including pacas, agoutis, and anteaters, while learning about jungle survival techniques.
  • Return to the base camp while enjoying a breathtaking sunset.
  • Evening boat ride to spot caimans and elusive capybaras along the riverbanks.
  • Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3: 5:00 am – “Last Moments in the Jungle”

  • Early morning excursion to track and observe primates that are most active at dawn.
  • Light breakfast at the lodge.
  • Hands-on fishing experience using traditional tools like harpoons, rods, and slingshots to catch piranhas and other fish species.
  • Return to the lodge and free time to enjoy the serene environment.
  • Farewell lunch at the lodge.
  • Boat ride back to San Joaquín de Omagua and private transfer to Iquitos.

Accommodations and Others

– Lodging

Stay in small refuges near the villages within the Yanayacu Communal Reserve or at comfortable campsites along riverbanks or lagoons. The refuges, built with locally sourced materials, harmonize with the surrounding rainforest and reflect the rustic style of indigenous Amazonian communities.

Campsites feature tents or tambos for sleeping.

– Transportation

Transfers from Iquitos are conducted in taxis or vans, depending on the group size. Within the Yanayacu Communal Reserve, excursions are carried out on wooden motorboats with low-emission engines to minimize environmental impact.

– Meals

Meals focus on fish, chicken, and other local meats. Special dietary requirements (e.g., vegetarian) should be communicated in advance.

– Guides and Excursions

Local guides, raised in the Peruvian tropical rainforest, provide in-depth ecological and cultural knowledge. They excel in survival skills and identifying important trees, medicinal plants, birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects while ensuring an engaging and informative experience.

– Location

Situated in a significant area of Loreto, Peru, the camp is accessible via the Amazon River, approximately 140 km from Iquitos. The area includes vibrant communities like Ayacucho, Tipishca, and San Juan, as well as stunning floodplains, lagoons, and tributaries. Local residents actively participate in resource management, conservation, and ecotourism activities.

Tips:

  • Clothes must be light colors and not tight to the body.
  • Travel with small backpacks or bags for easier transportation and to avoid handling by third parties.
  • You could get and bring candies, clothes, notebooks, and any other items you wish to gift to the children of indigenous communities.

Vaccines and other precautions:

Peru does not require travelers to receive vaccinations before visiting the Amazon rainforest. However, we recommend vaccines/pills for yellow fever, malaria, hepatitis A and B, and typhoid fever. These should be administered at least 10 days before your trip.
